How Can the Teacher Encourage Students to Be Productive? • Always be prepared • If the teacher is not prepared, it shows the students that preparation is not necessary • Avoid overexposure to material • Students may become bored • Expect the best behavior • Positive reinforcement for good behavior

  7. How Can the Teacher Encourage Students to be Productive? (2) • Remain calm at all times • Students will pick up and often mimic emotion • Use humor in the classroom • Give reminders of correct behavior

  8. Learning Styles • Incorporation of mixed learning styles encourages participation from all students • Reinforce ideas in different ways, rather than simple repetition

  9. Encouraging New Behaviors • Reinforce behavior that is similar to ideal • Move on by ceasing reinforcement of “close” behavior, while encouraging behavior that is closer to ideal • Continuing gravitating towards perfect behavior • End with only reinforcing entirely ideal behavior

How Can the Teacher Discourage Undesirable Behavior? • Always model positive behavior • Reasonable and consistent consequences • Students will test their limits • More likely to act out if they believe they can • Avoid behavior discrimination • Students should know that undesirable behavior isnever desirable

  11. Punishment • Set specific guidelines for punishment and give explanation • Try to punish privately • Avoid placing blame on the student by focusing on the behavior, not the individual • Monitor the effectiveness of specific punishments and only use ones that work
