PHILOSOPHY Y2M is our way of sharing, with young women, our passion for mathematics. We feel that mathematics is not a subject to be intimidated by, but a subject that is useful, elegant and attainable. Young women need positive role models to see the many uses of mathematics.
GOALS OF THE DAY • Provide students with extracurricular math experiences • Meet women from math related careers • Show students the connection between math, computers and science • Interact with young women from other schools

MATH CONTESTS • Y2M 2000 – Individual Contestants • Entered a raffle by submitting their answer to a question (two raffles-two questions) • Randomly selected submissions • Correct answers won prizes • 1st prize – books • 2nd prize – calculator covers • Y2M 2001/2002 – Teams • Teams were randomly formed with girls from different schools (using female mathematicians) • 30 minutes to answer questions • Prizes went to the top three scoring groups • 1st Prize – Calendars/Books/Calculator Covers • 2nd Prize – Books/Calculator Covers • 3rd Prize – Calculator Covers

CHECKLIST(1) Checklist for Math Day *Denotes a sample has been included in your packet • Secure Funding (Start at your college’s grants office or search the web) • Pick a Day • Find Presenters for the Day • Find Guest Speakers • Find Faculty Volunteers for the Day* • Find Student Volunteers for the Day • Collect Descriptions of Workshops for Advertising* • Create a Website* • Printing of Envelopes and Letterhead*
CHECKLIST(2) • First Mailing. Mailing should include: • Letter describing program and inviting participants* • Flyers advertising the event* • RSVP to be returned to you* • Secure Rooms for the Event • Secure Equipment (microphones, lecterns, overhead projectors, computers, etc.) • Check with College About Insurance for Guests • Shopping. This includes the following: • Logo pencils* • Logo keychains* • Logo pads* • College folders • Gifts for chaperones (ex: Math Videos) • Contest prizes (ex: books, calculator covers, calendars)
CHECKLIST(3) • Create Program* • Second Mailing. This should include: • Letter describing, in more detail, the event.* • List of workshops* • Registration sheet* • Information about poster contest* • Flyers advertising the event* • Order Food • Assign Workshops to Participants • Photocopy Women Mathematicians. Enough for one per table and one per team member assigned to that table. *
