CAS Distance Education Programs and Student Success and Strategic Planning • CAS Distance Education Programs • Change in using technology to deliver programs causes changes and questions in: • Teaching • Learning • Student Affairs Programs • Student Support Services • No longer just residents and commuters but now includes students who never step foot on a campus • These students must receive the same services as other students

Student Success • Who defines student success? • Students have three goals to attending college • Enrollment • Academic Experiences • Social Experiences • A student’s withdraw from an institution does not always indicate failure • Could be for job retraining • Could be to transfer to another institution

  4. Student Success • Other reasons for leaving an institution • Economics • Cannot afford • Costs perceived to outweigh the benefits • Organizational Perspectives • Institutional size • Bureaucracy • Institutional communication

  5. Student Success • Psychological Perspectives • Individual behaviors and patterns • Climate of the institution • Sociological Perspectives • Culture • Peer Groups • Student interaction with the institution (Tinto)

  6. Student Affairs Functions • Varies from institution to institution but can include: • Academic advising • Assessment, Research, and Program Evaluation • Athletics • Campus Safety • Career Development • Student Unions • Service Learning • Commuter services
