Retention & Mentorship Why is this important?
Of the 329,000 annual members who paid dues in 2016-17, 66,444 did not renew in 2017-18 86% were at the Post level and only 14% were Department at Large members
Retention The retention of all ages of veterans is paramount to the growth and survivability of the VFW.
Reasons to Focus on Retention • Mission - Take a moment to reread our mission statement. What does it say? It’s about providing the best services and advocacy for our members, not recruiting the most members. Think about that. If we are not working toward our mission statement, we’re not doing our job. • Referrals - If we play our cards right, that search could lead prospective members right into our arms. A focus on member retention increases satisfaction which leads to positive reviews and referrals. In other words, a focus on retention fuels recruitment.
Reasons to Focus on Retention • Money - A traditional strategy for gaining attention is advertising, but to have an effective campaign there are more costs than we may think. Between the research, the message testing, and the actual ad purchase, we’re looking at a big expense. It is much cheaper to retain members we already have. • Reputation - If we are expending all our time and energy on recruitment, we’re are probably neglecting our current members, fueling dissatisfaction. Today with the internet, our organization is vulnerable to bad attention.
If members are leaving, the reasons why are just a google away. When you are considering investing in something, don’t you research it? We have to realize that our prospective members are doing the same.
Our current challenges with retaining members • Attrition - we are losing our older veterans at high rates. This is inevitable, given that for decades the largest block of VFW members was WWII and Korean veterans who are all now in their 80s and older. Our Vietnam veterans (currently the largest block) are also starting to creep into their 70s. • Inaction - Posts that are not actively working to serve their community and attract new members.
“Slipping out the back door” Annual members are not renewing their dues, and the main reason is that they either do not see any benefit to their membership or they do not feel welcome at the Post.
Reasons For Members Leaving Our Organization Disorganized Post Leadership Inadequate Orientation (Mentoring) Social Cliques, Lack of Friends Lack of Recognition Lack of Growth / Development Lack of Important Programs Not Listening to or supporting what (newer) Members Want
Members Will Remain In the Post if: It is well organized It is financially stable It has a direction and purpose It is dedicated to important projects It promotes a sense of trust among all members It keeps members involved It considers the input of all members in the Post decisions It provides recognition for members efforts
Since 2008, Women veterans in the VFW increased from 3977 members to 19,402 on 7/1/2018 Women Veterans Brochure available through the Membership Department. (Also available .pdf online)
To ensure that VFW and its values will persevere for another century and beyond, we must cultivate individuals who will lead this organization, remember its history, and carry on service and patriotism. We need leaders who value the future of the VFW enough to invest their time recruiting and guiding future leaders from a younger veterans population. WE NEED VFW MENTORS !!!!!
A successful mentorship environment will promote personal and professional excellence and involvement throughout the Veterans of Foreign Wars, maximizing every member’s potential.
Mentorship will ultimately prepare each individual for specific and general responsibilities that they will be required to assume during the course of their involvement in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
