IW Training Conference Keeping your head above water Dan Reading
Presentation overview • Who we are & what we do • Infrastructure • Subjects to consider when delivering inland helmsman course • Emerging issues • Discussion
What does The Green Blue do? • Last year we worked with many marinas, packs for clubs including energy monitors, spill kits, super spouts and launched green guide for marinas • More of the same this year - look out for some video tutorials
Where to start- infrastructure • Infrastructure – marinas, clubs, authorities • BWML, Tingdene, Thames marinas
What are the main environmental issues affecting the inland sector?
Dealing With an Oil or Fuel Spill on Water 1. Choose; Tackle the spill or call the authorities Your spill kit should contains enough absorbent material to clean up a 10 litre spill. For larger spills call the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60. Be ready to tell them your location. 2. Put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves if needed 3. Isolate the source of oil/fuel if possible and easy to do so. E.g. turn off bilge pump 4. Place the floating boom around the spill to stop the oil or fuel from spreading. Float the mats on top of the oil or fuel to mop up the spill. Place all used materials into plastic bag supplied in spill pack. 5. Do not dispose in general waste. Place rubbish in special Oily Rag waste bin available at marina or hwrc
Subjects to consider when delivering course: • Refuelling, introduce spill kit to students • Never use washing up liquid to disperse spills • Bilge socks, inline bilge filters, regulations • Diesel maintenance- location and readiness
Prevention Reaction
Eutrophication FYI RYA weed guidance document
Subjects to consider when delivering course: • Low phosphate benefits • Eutrophication • How to use pump out
Issue resolved? • Various new regulations for facilities i.e. marina • Increased awareness • Better facilities • Cost saving for recycling
Issue resolved? • Over the side waste
Main points to take away • Get a spill kit • Get the spill kit out when refuelling • Always plug in to shore power to charge batteries • We really value feedback of what works and issues you come across
Discussion • What can you do when you get back home for the next course? • Issues specific to your geographical area… • Is there increased awareness from customers • What questions do you get asked? • Wildlife, bank erosion, speed
