Figurative Language . By: Tenecia McCoy . Personification. Personification is giving an object human characteristics. For example- Hey diddle diddle , the cat played the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon. The cat played his fiddle so the fork ran away with the spoon. Alliteration.

  2. Personification • Personification is giving an object human characteristics. For example- Hey diddle diddle, the cat played the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon. The cat played his fiddle so the fork ran away with the spoon.

  3. Alliteration • Alliteration is just consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words. For example- Shelly’s going to Seattle to sell seashells and shirts. A better example- LL cool j likes his lemonade like he likes his limousine.

  4. Assonance • Assonance is a repeated vowel sound in a line or lines of poetry. Example- I picked some sticks at six. It was a nix to fix a birdhouse. I’d really got something mix in the bowl of sticks and pixie dust. It was hard to remix a tape.

  5. Hyperbole • Hyperbole is an exaggeration often used for emphasis. For example- “Don’t be afraid to ask a question because the whole entire world is filled with weird and wonder us things all around. The world makes us think of what we are all made of. So never stop asking- Tenecia McCoy

  6. Onomatopoeia • Onomatopoeia- words that imitate the sound they are naming. Aka- action words. For example- Boom, crackle, pop, ding dong, squeak, clash, roar, growl, meow, and bark.

  7. Metaphor • A metaphor is direct comparison of two unlike things. For example- Sally was an owl to other people because she is quiet.

  8. Simile • Simile is just two comparisons using like or as.
