  1. Luke 1.5-17

  2. Hope needs to be nurtured in us “upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and regulations blamelessly. “ vs.6

  3. “ . . .we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5.3

  4. The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof. -- Barbara Kingsolver

  5. Hope contends with fear and despair “ . . . remember you were separate from Christ . . . without hope and without God in the world. Eph.2.12

  6. Despair is a premature anticipation of the non-fulfillment of what we hope for from God. The pain of despair lies in the fact that a hope is there, but no way opens up towards its fulfillment. Between hope and our experience faith takes a stand.

  7. Hope is closer than you think

  8. Hope is the feeling you have that the feeling you have isn't permanent. -Jean Kerr

  9. “The present is never our end, we only think of it as launching pad for our future, the past and the present are our means, but the future alone is our end. So we never live, but we hope to live; and so we are always preparing to be happy, it is inevitable we will never be so this way.” - Blasé Pascal

  10. "Hope is not a strategy.” Benjamin Ola Akande, Dean of the Business School at Webster University

  11. Hope must be active

  12. Hope is not fatalistic resignation. It is not being compelled to work at keeping up appearances with a bogus spirituality. It is the opposite of desperate and panicky manipulations, of scurrying and worrying. It is not dreaming. It is not spinning an illusion or fantasy to protect us from our boredom or our pain.

  13. Hope means a confident, alert expectation that God will do what He said he will do. Hope means going about our lives, confident that God will provide the meaning and the conclusion.

  14. “Hope is imagination put in the harness of faith. Eugene Peterson

  15. Hope is passion for what is possible. Soren Kierkegaard

  16. But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3.15

  17. Because hope is much more than a mood, it involves a commitment to action. Its moral character implies that what we hope for should be what we are prepared to work for and so bring about, as far as that power lies in us. -John Polkinghorne

  18. “O little town of BethlehemHow still we see thee lieAbove thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go byYet in thy dark streets shinethThe everlasting LightThe hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee tonight"
