Moms Rule: Celebrate Mother’s Day with These Tips for Self Care With Mother’s Day right around the corner, this is the week when we honor moms of all kinds. And whether you have a newborn baby (congrats to the UK’s Duchess of Sussex on new mom status!), adult children who are out on their own — or even furbabies, you deserve to be celebrated on Mother’s Day. This is your special day; embrace it!
Mindful Motherhood and Self Care Motherhood is an incredible responsibility, and all too often, moms don’t take enough time for themselves. Embracing mindful motherhood means engaging in self-care. After all —you can’t take care of your family if you don’t take care of yourself, first! As the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So, here are five Mother’s Day activities that will help you relax, recharge, and feel your very best — so you can be there for yourself and for your family. Get pampered. What better opportunity for pampering than Mother’s Day? You deserve a spa day! Whether that means a massage, a manicure/pedicure, a new haircut, or a facial — choose something that will make you feel gorgeous and glowing. If budget is an issue, consider an at-home spa experience! Try one of these DIY facials, this easy sugar scrub, or one of these bubble bath recipes. You can relax in the tub, meditate, or listen to some soothing music.
Carve out some alone time. Family life often means a lot of togetherness — and not a lot of solo time. But we all need some time alone in order to clear our heads and organize our thoughts. Solo time is an important form of self-care, and helps us to connect with our authentic selves. Choose an activity that you love to do, whether it’s reading, catching up on your favorite streaming series, gardening, or scrolling through some uplifting social media. Just set aside as much time as you’re able (whether it’s just 15 minutes or a few hours) to do whatever you love, all by yourself. Take a break from social media. There’s a famous saying: ―comparison is the thief of joy.‖ The pressure of comparison can be particularly difficult for moms. Social media is FULL of images of ―perfect‖ moms — but all too often, these posts (and accounts) are highly curated. Rarely do they showcase the difficult, stressful, and challenging moments that inevitably come with motherhood, so they can make many women feel more alone. Taking a break from social media can help you celebrate your own version of motherhood —without feeling like you have to compare it to someone else’s. Another option is to start looking at more relatable social media accounts – like this list of young moms who keep it real on Instagram. Or follow ―Scary Mom‖ or ―Bad Parenting‖ on Snapchat. Remember: ―Don't compare your behind-the-scenes to everyone else's highlight reel.‖ Spend some time in nature. Nothing recharges your batteries like a walk in the woods. That’s why some doctors are actually prescribing ―shinrin-yoku‖ (as they call it in Japan), or forest bathing, as a tool for beating stress and improving overall health! Take a walk alongside a nearby lake, go to the beach, hike your favorite mountain, or spend some time in a park. Wherever you live, there are bound to be lots of opportunities to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine — or even the rainy days. Nature always has something to offer, and it can offer a wealth of mental and physical health benefits.
Meditate. Meditation is one of the best ways to connect to the peace and joy that are always accessible within. No matter how stressful or hectic your life as a mom gets, you can always find some inner stillness when you take a few minutes for meditation.
