  3. Massachusetts defies Britain

  4. Boston Tea Party • Parliament passed the Tea Act • Lowered taxes on Br. East India Company tea

  5. Boston Tea Party • Tea Act bypassed colonial merchants • Colonist enraged- losing money

  6. Boston Tea Party • Tea brought to Boston • Boston Sons of Liberty boarded ships and dumped it in the water

  7. Why did the Boston Tea Party occur?

  8. Coercive Acts • Passed to punish MA.- closed Boston ports

  9. Quebec Act • Gave most land west of Appalachians to Quebec • If colonist moved there, they could not vote

  10. Intolerable Acts • Coercive Acts and the Quebec Act • Britain trying to take over colonial government

  11. What were the Intolerable acts?

  12. 1st Continental Congress • Sept, 1774 • Delegates from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia • Some want to compromise, some want to fight • No agreement

  16. Loyalists & Patriots • Loyalists- Americans that backed the British • Patriots- Americans that backed the rebellion
