What is “Ultimate Unification” ? • UU is a “Special Theory of Everything”, (STOE) • UU would Combine “A Sense of Classical Physicality” with “The Subtleties of Modern Observation” • UU would Reconcile “Classical Objective Realism” with “Modern Abstractionalism” • UU would Unify An “Abstract Theory of Everything” with An “Objective Physical Reality”

  3. The Goal of Ultimate Unification • An Impossible Dream? • A Foolish Diversion? • A Waste of Time? • Quite to the Contrary, I contend: UU is a Great and Worthy Quest! • On a Personal Note: Quietly from the sidelines for 15 years, I have explored the issues bearing on UU.

  4. The Two Main Problems(of many problems)For Ultimate Unification • Problem # 1: To Develop a Viable Theory of “Quantum Relativity” • Problem # 2: To Reconcile that “Quantum Relativity” with an “Objective Physical Reality”

  5. When Can We ExpectUltimate Unification? • Not Today! Unless one of the remaining speakers has a surprise for us. • Maybe Next year? Next year I will disclose my model for a “Theory of Objective Quantum Relativity”! • In the meantime, for today: Let us consider two small steps toward UU, to gather a sense for this Great Venture.

  6. Two Small Steps TowardUltimate Unification • Step # 1: To Merely identify UU as a goal. • Step # 2: To Present Four Examples from Flat Spacetime that Reconcile “Classical Realism” with “Modern Abstractionalism”

Why consider a Classical PedagogyFor the Constancy of Light? • Note: “Pedagogy” means “a way of teaching”. • These examples of Classical Pedagogy actually do reconcile “Classical Objective Realism” with “Relativistic Abstractionalism”. • These examples of Classical Pedagogy are understandable even for non-technical people. • These examples of Classical Pedagogy reinforce the Classical Science Education of most College Students.

  8. What are these examples involving Flat Spacetime? • The observation of relatively moving lengths. • The observation of relatively moving clocks. • The off-setting of displaced clocks. • The measuring of the one-way speed of light. Now, consider a train moving at 4/5 the speed of light, approaching an identical train at rest:

  9. What does the rest observer see as the length of the moving train? The moving train is 3/5 of the rest train. But light from the back of the moving train must catch up to the front of that train. 5 times longer? 3 times longer!

  10. What does the moving observer seeas the length of the rest train? The rest train is 5/3 of the moving train. A reference line of cars slide past as light comes from the backend of the rest train. Again, 3 times longer! NO (Actually - 3 times the visibly fore-shortened forward reference). YES

Both Observers See the Lengthof the other Approaching Trainas Three Times the Normal Length! • Classical Objectivity of Length is Satisfied. • Abstract Relativity of Length is also Satisfied. • In this example of Observing Moving Lengths, “Objective Physicality” is shown to be Compatible with “Relativistic Abstractionalism”.

  12. What does the rest observer see as the rate of the moving train’s clock? The moving train’s clock is slowed to 3/5. But the moving train moves into its own signal to shorten its signal wave length. For waves emitted from the moving train,Wave Length is 1/3, Frequency is tripled!

  13. What does the moving observer seeas the rate of the rest train’s clock? The moving observer’s clock slows to 3/5. The moving train (with it’s slower clock) moves up to meet the rest train’s signal. Nominal Period = 45 27 15 45 1/3 Recorded Period yields Triple Frequency!

Both Observers See the Clock Rateof the other Approaching Trainas Three Times the Normal Rate! • Classical Objectivity of Time is Satisfied. • Abstract Relativity of Time is also Satisfied. • In this example of Observing Moving Clocks, “Objective Physicality” is shown to be Compatible with “Relativistic Abstractionalism”.

  15. What happens to a moving pair of synchronized clocks,when separated in the line of motion? The faster moving clock runs slower! Thus the faster moving clock becomes offset and out of sync with the other clock. The Time Offset is directly proportional to distance offset in the direction of motion and the reference frame’s absolute velocity!

  16. What is the measurement of the one-way speed of light in a moving frame of reference? • Due to altered signal times, the actual time for light to travel a given length varies (plus or minus). • Due to length contraction, the actual time for light to travel is reduced. • Due to time dilation, the time recorded for light to travel is reduced. • Due to offset clocks, the time recorded for light to travel is further altered (minus or plus).

  17. Altered Signal Times, Length Contraction,Time Dilation, and Offset Timing Combine to produce the same “Localized Measurement” for the Speed of Light! • Classical Objectivity of Light Speed is Satisfied. • Abstract Relativity of Light Speed is also Satisfied. • In this example of Measuring the Speed of Light, “Objective Physicality” is shown to be Compatible with “Relativistic Abstractionalism”.

  18. The Transformation Equations of “Special Relativity” are NOT know as the “Einstein Equations”, but are know as the “Lorentz Transformation Equations”. H. A. Lorentz imagined that confirmed effects attributed to Special Relativity are produced by symbiotic distortions to objects induced by their absolute motion! . . . Lorentz was Right ! ! !

  19. The Failure to Recognizean “Underlying Objective Physicality” for“Special Relativity” has Great Consequences! • One bad consequence of this failure is that Naive Proponents of “Objective Physicality” foolishly reject proven tenants of “Special Relativity”. • Another bad consequence of this failure is that Naive Proponents of “Relativistic Abstractionalism” foolishly reject “Objective Physical Reality”. • Science and Society as a whole are poorly served!

  20. With all due deference to Niels Bohr and to all the confirmed observations of quantum mechanics, • I choose to side with Albert Einstein, and say: • “Physics without Objective Physical Reality is lame and a sad excuse for science!”

  21. In Conclusion: “Objective Physicality” can be Reconciled with “Modern Abstractionalism”. “Ultimate Unification” is a “Most Worthy Quest” and hopefully significant progress can be achieved in the near future! STAY TUNED: N. Glenn Gratke - October 16, 2004
