Co-ordinated floating systems team work A test case on applying the TCP to offshore design Enhancing European maritime collaboration through service and technology transfer A European Maritime Day event– 22/05/2014
Overview • Example Atkins Oil & Gas design project • Why is this Relevant? • Case Study Development • Survey and Results • Conclusions
Example Atkins Design Project Patent Pending - Reference GB2507370 • Design of a Compact Floating Production and Storage vessel. • Vessel Displacement ~70,000 Te. • Client interested in several different topside variants and operating locations. * Topside VCG is above the top deck
The Hull Design / Arrangement Patent Pending - Reference GB2507370
Typical Oil & Gas Design Projects • Work across many different disciplines: • Sizing and weight control • Structural design • Stability analysis • Hydrodynamic analysis • Marine Engineering • E.t.c. • Requirement to maintain consistent design information • Potential interactions with external parties: • Model testing facilities • Topside and process design • Subcontracting consultants/SMEs • Desire / need to find new & better solutions • E.g.–UK oil & gas which is currently uneconomical to extract estimated at 3-4mill boeor £200billion. • Is there a technological solution from a European SME?
Co-ordinated team work in Design • Example of coordinating teamwork in an offshore design • Focused on a novel solution (recently patented) • Demonstrate how the TCP tool could assist team in development and integration of different systems/technologies • Considerable similar use by a range of SME and others parties
TCP Case Study Question: Do we need something like the TCP? Where could we improve? Question: Would the TCP assist in co-ordinating work across the team?

Conclusions • Survey responses suggest that the TCP tool has potential to improved working practices across small organisation. • Results identified areas for potential development – Most clear would be the provision of documentation through the TCP to explain/detail network functions. • The TCP could provide SME (and others!) with a glass box – where the working is open and apparent – but this is dependent on sufficient documentation to enhance understanding and allow SMEs to develop/improve their engineering process to improve the European maritime sectors competiveness.
