What are the types of equipment needed for the successful operations of a Kentucky landfill?
Chapter 04 General Objective Explain the tasks associated with landfill operations, the types of equipment needed, and the steps necessary for an effective maintenance program.
Chapter 04 Specific Objectives • Understand the tasks associated with operations of a landfill andthetypes of equipment needed. • Describe the steps in an effective maintenance program. • Demonstrate knowledge of theequipment regulations for each landfill type.
Operational Considerations • Hauling of Cover Material • Volume required • Distance cover material transported • Type of soil or material to be excavated • Waste and Soil Cover Compaction • Type and amount of solid waste being compacted • Type and depth of cover material • Number of passes required • Minimum weight and horsepower requirements • Peak rates of waste disposal (tons per hour)
Operational Considerations • Supplemental Tasks • Site clearing • Maintaining access road(s) • Excavating ditches • Machine Availability • Recommended usage rates (capacity in units per hour) • Backup equipment availability • Consideration of machine warranties when purchasing • Estimated cost of machine repairs and labor for life of machine
Selecting Equipment • Difficult for CDD or Industrial Landfill • Only one machine is used • Must be capable of spreading and compacting solid waste and cover material • Used to excavate ditches, an area, or cover material • Equipment should be selected that will give HIGH PERFORMANCE in all use categories
Maintenance • CDD or Contained Landfill • Sufficient equipment to spread and compact all wastes received • Backup equipment must be readily available if main equipment fails • Proper maintenance of equipment is a PRIORITY
BENEFITS of Proper Maintenance • Maximizes equipment effectivenessand equipment life • Minimizes equipment breakdownand excessive repairs • Allows for reliable service to the public • Minimizesinjuries from faulty equipment • Helps maintain sanitary conditions • Minimizes downtime
Maintenance Recordkeeping Program • Contained Landfills • REQUIRED to have an EQUIPMENT OPERATING and MAINTENANCE Recordkeeping Program • Must track availability of primary and backup equipment used for: • Spreading, covering, and compacting waste • Maintaining road and drainage features • Dust suppression • Maintaining Leachate and Methane Gas Systems
Daily Maintenance Program • Designed to keep equipment in peak condition and prevent failure • Periodic Program Maintenance • 125 hours, 250 hours, 500 hours, 1000 hours (time interval) • Inspect, Clean, and Service on a Regular Schedule • Preventive Maintenance • Prolong Equipment Service Life (condition-based) • Prevents deterioration: cleaning, oiling, retightening, inspection (safety brakes, parking brake, backup alarm)
Equipment Regulations • CDD Landfills (p. 33) • Contained Landfills (pp. 33-34)
