Let’s review what we did in the last session We learnt the following terms: Adding unlike fractions is more complicated than adding like fractions. To add two fractions with unlike denominator do the following steps: Step1: Find the LCD ( Least Common Denominator) for each fraction. Step2: Express each fraction as an equivalent fraction whose denominator is the LCD for the two fractions. Step3: Add the fractions. Step4: Write the answer in simplest form. CONFIDENTIAL
Review Find : 2 + 1 9 6 Here, before you can add the fractions with different denominators, you must first find equivalent fractions with the same denominator, like this: STEP 1: Find the LCD ( Least Common Denominator) for each fraction. Here the denominator are 6 and 9. Prime factorization of 6 = 2 × 3 Prime factorization of 9 = 3 × 3 LCD = 2 × 3 × 3 = 18 CONFIDENTIAL
Review STEP 2: Let’s rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the denominator 18. Here, 2 = 2 x 2 = 4 9 9 x 2 18 1 = 1 x 3 = 3 6 6 x 3 18 And, STEP 3: Add the fractions. 2 + 1 = 4 + 3 = 7 9 6 18 18 18 STEP 4: Write the answer in simplest form. The answer is7 18 Already in simplest form. CONFIDENTIAL
Review Subtracting unlike fractions involves same process like adding unlike fractions. To subtract two fractions with unlike denominator do the following steps: Step1: Find the LCD ( Least Common Denominator) for each fraction. Step2: Express each fraction as an equivalent fraction whose denominator is the LCD for the two fractions. Step3: Subtractthe fractions. Step4: Write the answer in simplest form. CONFIDENTIAL
Review Find : 4 - 1 9 6 Here, before you can subtract the fractions with different denominators, you must first find equivalent fractions with the same denominator, like this: STEP 1: Find the LCD ( Least Common Denominator) for each fraction. Here the denominator are 6 and 9. Prime factorization of 6 = 2 × 3 Prime factorization of 9 = 3 × 3 LCD = 2 × 3 × 3 = 18 CONFIDENTIAL
Review Review STEP 2: Let’s rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the denominator 18. Here, 4 = 4 x 2 = 8 9 9 x 2 18 1 = 1 x 3 = 3 6 6 x 3 18 And, STEP 3: Subtract the fractions. 4 - 1 = 8 - 3 = 5 9 6 18 18 18 STEP 4: Write the answer in simplest form. The answer is5 18 Already in simplest form. CONFIDENTIAL
Today we will see Multiplication of proper fraction & whole number When we do the process of multiplication, We are to repeatedly add the multiplicand as many times as there are 1's in the multiplier. When multiplying a fraction you do not need a common denominator. Here, we multiply the two numerators (the top numbers) to make the new numerator, and multiply the two denominators (the bottom numbers) to make the new denominator. CONFIDENTIAL
MULTIPLYING FRACTION BY WHOLE NUMBERS To multiply a fraction by a whole number follow the given steps: # The whole number must be turned into a fraction, with the whole number as the numerator, and the number 1 as the denominator. # Multiply out the numerators. # Multiply out the denominators. This does not change the denominator. # Simplify the final result. Change the improper fraction to a mixed fraction and simplify it if possible. CONFIDENTIAL
