How to get started on your own business By : KomalDhaliwal
Most people that I know would like to start their own business at some point in life. I always hear them say, “ I want to start my own business, but I don’t know how to get started” And sometime some of us keep on postponing that thought because we are scared of getting it wrong and crushing our hopes.
I have some pointers that will help you get started on your business.
Know your values, strengths and goals • You need to truthfully ask yourself and others what your values and strengths are? • Even if you don’t agree with the feedback that you get from others, embrace it. • It will tell you how you come across in your relationships with people around you.
Know your business • Gather as much information as you can about your business and ask yourself : • What growth chances are there? • What are the strengths and weaknesses of your business? • How does your business represent you? • How do others around perceive it? • The more you know about your business , the better equipped you are to take it to new levels.
Know your market • You need to know who your target market is • This will help you understand their needs which can later on help you make your services better.
Know your competitors • You need to know the services/products that your competitors offer; which will again help you to make your services better by adding changes.
Know the trends in the industry • Know your industry, and be aware of any changes made within. • Be one of the first ones to follow the changes so you can improve your products/services. • “BE A LEADER NOT A FOLLOWER”, don’t be the last one to find out about the changes.
Know your finances • You need to know your fixed costs and profit. • How much is needed to keep your family standard of living while you build your business? • You should know where your funds are coming from and for how long?
Know your short-term future • Set a goal for yourself of where you would like to be in the next 6 – 12 months. • Think of all the hardship, successes, excitement and fears that you can foresee coming your way.
Know your long-term future • Ask yourself where you would like to be in the long run as in - The more your business grows and the more people become involved in and dependent on it, the harder the work for the person in charge is
Know your commitment • Once you have gathered all of your information, tell yourself how big of a commitment it is and know how committed you are to achieving this.
Know your support • You need a supportive environment, a supportive network of people you can turn to for advice, encouragement and praise. • Be thankful when you are provided with feedback.
Things that you need to know • Know your values, strengths and goals • Know your business • Know your market • Know your competitors • Know the trends in the industry • Know your finances • Know your short-term future • Know your long-term future • Know your commitment • Know your support
