Memory and Thought Chapter 10.1- Taking in and Storing Information
The Storage and retrieval of what has been learned or experienced is Memory.
Three Stages of Memory • Sensory Memory: the senses of sight and hearing( among others senses) that are able to hold an input for a fraction of a second before it disappears. Serves three functions: • Prevents you from being overwhelmed • Gives you some decision time • Allow for continuity and stability in your world
Short- Term Memory( Working Memory) • Things you have in your conscious mind at any one moment, and does not involve paying close attention. • To keep short-term memory for a few second, you repeat the information to yourself or out loud; This is know as maintenance rehearsal. • Chunking is the process of grouping items to make them easier to remember; this is a trick to memorizing a lot of information quickly; it is only temporary and without rehearsal last for less than 20 seconds.
Long- Term Memory • The storage of information over extended periods of time; the capacity of long-term memory appears to be limitless, and contains representation of countless facts, experiences, and sensations.
