  4. Why American Lit? Now that you have had a small taste of American lit, let’s see why you study it..

  5. America the Beautiful- and talented • We read American literature for a number of reasons. • First, great books shape our goals and values by clarifying our own identities. • Second, reading American literature enables us to develop perspectives on events occurring both locally and globally. • Finally, literature is one of the shaping influences of life

  6. Literature stimulates our imagination. By increasing our capacity to imagine, great literature makes our lives larger. Great writing becomes the voice that is great within us. • This year, we will probe the characteristics of American literature, especially what makes it different from the literature of all other nations. You will learn why American literature is important to you, especially as we move into the 21st century.

  7. Future shock Our world is changing in exciting –and frightening- ways. The 21st century has brought radical changes in the way we work, live, and even think. Look: (power point)

  8. This just goes to show that American literature will be important in this century because it provides the moral touchstone we need to stay grounded in an age of dizzying change.

  9. Just a thought American lit shapes our goals and values by clarifying our own identity, stimulating our imagination, and making our lives larger. It is relevant to the future as well as the past.

  13. Historical Background KWL • Now that you know a bit more about the background, take a minute to fill out the chart the best you can of what you know about Pilgrims, Native Americans, and yourself…lol • Continue filling out these charts as you read the story

Main Idea, Details, Notes, Summary • This foldable is going to outline the expository text structure in the story “from Of Plymouth Plantation.” • For each main idea (Voyage and Safe Arrival, The Starving Time, Indian Relations, and First Turkey) you will give at least three details that reinforce the main ideaunder the Pilgrim side • Lastly, you will summarize

Perspective Piece • Outside of class, write or type a 2-page narrative on the Native American perspective of the Pilgrims’ landing. • Use your foldable “from Of Plymouth Plantation” to help recall incidents that the Pilgrims described…then write about how this incident would be from the Native American perspective! • USE DETAIL!! • Another persuasion paper…persuade the reader that you have taken on the role of a Native American! • Go in the SAME order as your foldable…you MAY NOT add in things that did not occur in the excerpt of the story we read (like how you killed William Bradford). • Finally, create a cover page for your piece.

  17. Closure- Think about it…discuss The daring exploration of what is now North America by English Puritans is motivated by a wish for religious freedom. The Pilgrim’s earliest encounters with Native Americans and with harsh, unfamiliar land are difficult and frightening. So, what about the Native Americans and their early encounters with the Pilgrims?
