  1. Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [mmW WPAN Concept] Date Submitted: [14 September, 2003] Source: [Kiyoshi Hamaguchi] Company [Communications Research Laboratory, Incorporated Administrative Agency] Address [3-4, Hikarino-Oka, Yokosuka, Kanagawa, 234-0051, Japan] Voice:[+81.46.847.5073], FAX: [+81.46.847.5079], E-Mail:[hamaguti@crl.go.jp] Re: [] Abstract: [Description of WPAN concept using mmW which was developed by CRL] Purpose: [Contribution to mmWIG at September 2003 meeting] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). 2. mmW WPAN Concept The following individuals support this proposal: Akira AKEYAMA (NTT Advanced Technology Corp.) Kiyohito TOKUDA (Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd.) Toshiyuki HIROSE (Siemens K.K.) Hidenori SIMAWAKI (NEC Corp.) Kouichi SAKAMOTO (Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.) Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  3. mmW Propagation Characteristics • Rain attenuation • Atmospheric oxygen (O2) Absorption, i.e., 60GHz • …Short-range radio link • …Smaller interference, compared to microwaves Ref: ITU-R Rec. P. 676-3 60GHz mmW band Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  4. mmW Radio-Link Characteristics • Very wide frequency band • …High speed transmission • Radiated power limitation, i.e. 10mW, for unlicensed use • …Short-range communication • Usage of directional antennas • …Long-distance communication Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  5. WPAN Concept • Short-range radio communications network (~10m distance, among several nodes, independent local-area-network) • Possible wireless network between game-equipment, home appliance, video-signals transmission and PC/peripheral etc • Short-range/high-speed link … mmW is suitable • Easy to link among nodes … ad hoc link protocol Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  6. Tx & Rx Possible Wireless Links (1/2) Directional antenna • P-to-P • Very high-speed transmission • Long-distance link (a) Tx & Rx Tx & Rx Omni-directional antenna • P-to-MP • High-speed transmission • Short-range link (b) Tx & Rx Tx & Rx Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  7. Tx & Rx Tx & Rx Possible Wireless Links (2/2) Omni-directional antenna • P-to-MP • High-speed transmission • Wide-area (multi-hop) link (c) Tx & Rx Tx & Rx Tx & Rx Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  8. WPAN Scenarios • In a house: • - All appliances with Tx & Rx are mutually connectable • - Wirelessly Controllable appliances • In a meeting room: • - Notebook PC with mmW-Tx & Rx • - Share presenter’s material on their PCs • - Slide data can be transmitted to projector • Other situations: • - railway station, inside train or bus, store etc. Utilization example in a house Utilization example in a meeting room Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  9. Advantages of mmW system compared to UWB • Good coexistence between mmW system and 802.11a/b/g & Bluetooth because of large frequency difference • Good coexistence among mmW systems because of larger path-loss compared to microwave band systems • Higher speed transmission; i.e., more than 1Gbps • Exploitation of antenna directivity • …Longer transmission distance • Simple spectrum mask • Simple modulation/demodulation • Simple signal processing • Poorer frequency stability; i.e., within +/-500ppm Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL

  10. Conclusions • mmW WPAN concept and images are proposed • Advantages of mmW system compared to UWB are described Kiyoshi Hamaguchi, CRL
