  2. TIMELINE Monday, February 25th - students receive cards STUDENTS RANK ELECTIVE CHOICES IN PENCIL Thursday, February 28thstudents return completed cards to their first block teachers.

  3. CORE CLASS PLACEMENT • Math – • Rubric placement • Points for semester grade in current class, last year’s EOG score, Accuplacer score, and teacher recommendation. • Most students continue on their current placement track, but movement does happen. • Language Arts – • Grade in current class, last year’s EOG, teacher recommendation. • Science/SS are not grouped by ability level.

  4. THOUGHTS ON ALGEBRA • ALGEBRA PLACEMENT • Rubric placement process • Algebra is a HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT! It goes on your permanent record (that colleges will see!) • If you pass (D is passing!), you cannot re-take the class in high school. • Taking Algebra in 8th grade points students towards a college level math class in 12th grade (such as AP Calculus or AP Statistics or the IB equivalent). • IF I DON’T TAKE ALGEBRA… • Math progression for students who take 8th grade Standard math: • 9th grade: Algebra • 10th grade: Geometry (H) • 11th grade: Alg. II (H) • 12th grade: Pre-Calc (H) • This IS a college prep track! • You don’t need to “double up” in 9th grade.

  5. NINTH BLOCK • All students will be placed into a 9th block Academic Enrichment class. A tutoring Academic Remediation will be offered to students working below grade level in math and/or reading. • Students who choose 2 year long electives will take PE/Health during this time to fulfill the state requirement.

  6. 8th Grade AE Options AGTV • AGTV is a by-audition class where students produce the morning news show. • Listen to AGTV for the announcement that applications are available in the Media Center. • Would you like to help create our Yearbook?!? • This by-application class is a small, selected group that works on pictures, layouts, and written expression in our school Yearbook. • Listen to AGTV for the announcement that applications are available in the Media Center. RISING 7TH GRADE ELECTIVES • Year Long Electives: • BAND / ORCHESTRA – Students currently enrolled in these classes are encouraged to continue their musical experience! • Spanish I-A / French I-A - The first ½ of a high school credit foreign language class. Students must successfully complete I-A and the 8th grade I-B level to receive the credit for Spanish I or French I. • Semester Long Electives: • Computer Skills and Applications I • Computer Skills and Applications II • Exploring Entrepreneurship • Introduction to Dance (for young ladies) • Fitness (for young men) • Chorus • Art • Exploring Performing Arts (beginning Drama) • Drama II (teacher recommendation required) • Musical Theater (singing AND acting) • Required Elective: PE/Health 7

RISING 8TH GRADE ELECTIVES • Year Long Electives: • BAND / ORCHESTRA – Students currently enrolled in these classes are encouraged to continue their musical experience! • Spanish I-B / French I-B - The second ½ of a high school credit foreign language class. Students must successfully complete I-A in 7th grade and I-B in 8th grade to receive the credit for Spanish I or French I. If a student didn’t take I-A in 7th grade, he/she cannot take I-B in 8th grade. The grade for the completed courses will be on the student’s high school transcript, but will not affect high school GPA. • Semester Long Electives: • Computer Skills and Applications II • Exploring Entrepreneurship • Exploring Careers • Team Sports • Fitness (for young men) • Chorus • Art • Advanced Art (teacher recommendation required) • Ceramics (teacher recommendation required) • Exploring Performing Arts (beginning Drama) • Drama III (teacher recommendation required) • Required Elective: PE/Health 8
