Let’s prepare a puzzle/jigsaw • Cooperative base group lesson segments A, B, C • Informal group meetings let’s make “experts” in each segment • Cooperative base group teaching and learning from each other Sources: 1. http://www.jigsaw.org 2. ICE – UPC [http://www.upc.edu/ice/]
Let’s prepare a puzzle/jigsaw • The class is organised in cooperative base groups of 3 students. They remain together all the semester and work mainly in group. A class with the same timetable 2) Put together students with the same number Random base groups formation: G11 1) Give each student a different number 1 1 4 1 4 1 1 G12 1 2 5 2 5 2 2 3 6 3 6 3 2 3 G13 2 3 3 3GM11 / 3GM12
Let’s prepare a puzzle/jigsaw • Divide the assignment to the learned into 3 segments. For example a design flow of a circuit using 3 different techniques • Assign each student to learn one segment. So, every base group will have a member “expert” in a given segment. B 1 A B 2 1 A 1 B 2 3 2 3 A 3 C C C
Let’s prepare a puzzle/jigsaw • Form temporary informal "expert groups" by having one student from each jigsaw group join other students assigned to the same segment. Give students in these expert groups time to discuss the main points of their segment and to rehearse the presentations they will make to their jigsaw group. 1A Expert group in segment A 1A 1C 1B 2A 3A Base group G11 1C 3B 2A 2C 3C 4B 5B 2C 2B Expert group in segment C Expert group in segment B Base group G12
Let’s prepare a puzzle/jigsaw • Bring the students back into their base groups. Ask each student to present her or his segment to the group. Encourage others in the group to ask questions for clarification Now, these students are experts on their segment 5A The aim is that everyone learns all the segments, but being taught mostly by their own peers ! Just as in a jigsaw puzzle, each piece (each student's part) is essential for the completion and full understanding of the final product. 5C 5B 1A 2A Grup G06 1C 1B 2C 2B Grup G11 Grup G12
