    1. Preparing for performance assessment Prepare the environment The higher degree of realism, the better Higher realism, less control of environment Control and eliminate as many undesirable events as possible Failure to do so could unfairly handicap the student or unfairly benefit the student

Preparing for performance assessment Guidelines for preparing the environment All tools, equipment, etc are available in good working order Conditions for all students are the same Provide adequate space to perform Eliminate distractions Allow sufficient time to observe and provide feedback Create activities for students waiting to perform unrelated to performance test Create activities for students who have completed the performance test that have educational value

    4. Preparing for performance assessment Prepare the observer Multiple observers required for reliability Provide written instructions to observers Discuss potential errors in judgment and observation Conduct a practice session Provide examples of performance and ratings

    5. Diagnostic performance assessments Performance assessments do not have to be summative Procedure assessment can be used as a diagnostic tool Caution: did student just miss a step or does the student not understand the step? To determine, ask student to explain each step as it is performed.
