SHOOTING FILM IS A FIVE COURSE MEAL 1) Block – determining where the actors will be on the set and the first camera position2) Light – DP lights the set and positions the camera3) Rehearse – Prepare, prepare, prepare with the talent and crew4) Tweak - make adjustments (lighting/ camera/ talent position)5) Shoot – Shoot! (and repeat)
BLOCKING IS CRITICAL! Steps to Blocking the scene Read scene through (“No one move”) Let actors go- (sit back and watch) Make your changes Do it again- Think about camera placement Set is “striked” Director- LD, First AD, Script Supervisor
WHY AND WHO • What is the video’s purpose? (Why are you doing this?) • Equipment • Location • Who is the video’s intended audience? • Camera Movements/Angles • The “WOW FACTOR”- What shots will best support your POV?
WHERE AND WHEN • Site Survey- Evaluating your location (aesthetically and Physically) • Survey consistent with time of day of the shoot • Noise • Traffic • Weather
WHAT AND HOW • What am I shooting? • How am I shooting it? • WHAT DETERMINES THIS? • THE SCRIPT
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT! What is it that you want to see and hear in the film/video?
REMEMBER No matter who you are in the “picture” (film/video), if everyone has a clear picture of exactly what it is you are after, you're more likely to get the desired results… BUT YOU MUST KNOW WHAT YOU WANT FIRST!
