“The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies.” Henry David Thoreau In this passage, Thoreau is criticizing the general population which follows the government blindly without thought or, more importantly, feeling. As intuition and being true to oneself are of the utmost importance to Transcendentalists, being a “machine” is an undesirable position. Although he recognizes that the majority of the population is just a cog in the engine of the government, he urges each individual to take up and follow his or her own path. If everyone served the government blindly, there would be no opposition to or revolution against corrupt and unjust laws.
