Rejection of the Shepherd • The people rejected the true Shepherd • He left them in the hands of poor shepherds and did not pity them any more: • For I will no longer pity the inhabitants of the land,” says the LORD. (6)
Two Staffs • “I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bonds;” (7) • Shepherds held 2 staffs: • Rod: to chase away wild animals • Staff: to guide the flock • Christ holds 2 staffs: • Beauty (grace) to guide us • Bonds to unite us in His Spirit • When they rejected Him, He removed His grace from them: • Ruin of the old testament church • “Let what is dying die, and what is perishing perish. Let those that are left eat each other’s flesh.” And I took my staff, Beauty, and cut it in two, that I might break the covenant which I had made with all the peoples. (9-10)
The Price of Betrayal • “Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.” (12) • What is the silver? • St. Didymus: Divine words and inspirations • “The words of the LORD are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” (Ps 12:6) • “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver” (Pro 10:20)
The Price of Betrayal • The silver (words) in itself is not the problem, rather the deception behind it (impurity): • “People will call them rejected silver, Because the LORD has rejected them.” (Jer 6:30) • He rejected those who deceive and break the law • “His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords.” (Ps 55) • “Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.” (Matt 26:49) • “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 7:21) • The price of betrayal is impure words of deception

Field of Blood • “Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.” (Matt 27:5-8)
Field of Blood • “Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.” (Act 1:18-19)
