Economies of the North and South North South economy was agricultural, based on farming due to fertile soil and warm climate (good for growing tobacco and cotton) smaller towns transportation was difficult unless by water children did not spend much time in school economy began to stall • had farms but they were smaller farms • cities began to grow quickly • industry was growing so more factories were needed • transportation was easier because North had 2/3 of the railroad tracks in the country • higher population • more wealth established in the North • economy was beginning to boom
King Cotton • “King Cotton” was a phrase used to describe the economic and political importance of cotton production in the South • Invention of the cotton gin= cotton became the top cash crop (passed tobacco) • Cotton Production: 1)Field Work, 2) Shipped, 3) Shipyards/ Loading Docks, 4) Cotton Mills, 5) Delivery of the cotton usually by train, and 6) People purchase the cotton • #1 crop raised in the South • An important part of the North’s growing industrial economy
