Conceptualization for Spatiotemporal Geotechnical Database Implementation Isao Ishibashi and Jae Yoon Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering College of Engineering and Technology Old Dominion University Norfolk, Virginia USA
Context • Background/Needs • Objectives • Boundary Conditions • Important Design Considerations • Q & A • Demonstration
Background and Current Needs • gINT-compliant Geotechnical database • Need for a simple, robust yet expandable Geotechnical database • for • - Archival of existing records • - Addition of new records • - Retrieval/Query of existing records • (both in data- and gINT report-levels) • Geotechnical database should be able to handle spatiotemporal • variability (visual + interactivity) • Consideration for existing infrastructure and local replication issue
Objectives/Boundary Conditions • Implementation of a GIS-Web framework for handling • Geotechnical database • ESRI ArcGIS platform (ArcIMS) • Node-based Collaborative Server Topology (VTRC+?) • Minimize cost for implementation & training issue • Maximize turn-around time and usability • Consideration for short- and long-term planning
Important Design Considerations Why - What - How - Who • Open System Approach • Design the functionality, not layout (Capability) • Design the context, not forced procedures (Flexibility) • KISS rules/ “Clean-Room” approach (Usability) • Design from user’s perspective not from programmer’s
