  2. DDS ASD Services • Children’s Services • 33 Family Support Centers – Statewide • 10 Culturally Diverse Family Support Centers – Statewide • 7 Autism Support Centers – Statewide • Autism Waiver • DESE-DDS Programs

Additional Support for Families (DDS) • 7 Regional Autism Support Centers • Social Skills and Sensory Based Programs, Vacation Programs, Family Training, Sibling Support Groups • New service addition: small group family clinics • More than 5,000 children & families annually • Information & Referral – 6000 calls/yr

  4. DESE/DDS Program • Interagency agreement between the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Developmental Services • Major source of support to families through wrap-around services • 319 current participants approximately 2/3 with autistic disorder

Eligibility 4 types of children’s eligibility DDS determines eligibility for first three: • Global Developmental Delay – birth – 4th birthday • Significant Developmental Disability 5- 17th birthday • Autism Waiver – Significant Developmental Disability – namely an autism spectrum disorder – ages birth – 8th birthday and meet Level of Care for Intermediate Care Facility for individuals with intellectual disability • Autism Division – verification of autism spectrum disorder • DDS does not charge fees for any service for children • DDS tracks children with significant developmental disabilities but does not track by specific developmental disability

DDS – Autism Services Waiver Initiated: October 2007; 5 year Renewal: October 2010 Services • 1:1 behavioral, social & communication interventions through Expanded Educational Habilitation Services: 6-10 hours per week • Community integration activities, respite, family training • Home & vehicle modification • Expanded Educational Habilitation Services limited to 3 years or until age 9; ancillary supports available until age 9 • Autism Support Centers & Support Brokers • New as of October 2010: OT, PT, Speech Therapy & Behavioral Supports & consultation • Participant Directed Service model Number Served • 130 at any point in time - 170/year (unduplicated count) • Reserved capacity for 3yr olds • 580 applications in 10 days in 2010 • 1146 applications in 10 days in 2007

  8. Quality Management DDS has robust quality assurance system which includes the following: • Licensing or certification of providers • Performance Based Objectives • The National Core Indicator survey instruments • Heller Research on study on Autism Waiver • Provider satisfaction surveys

  9. GAPS • Individuals with Higher Functioning Autism and Aspergers are rarely eligible for DDS services • Development of services for Higher Functioning Autism and Aspergers individuals • Expansion of Autism Waiver both in terms of numbers of children who can participate and an expansion of the age limits • The need to develop continuity of services for children – birth – age 17
