Referents • Referent-is applied to all words that act as substitute. Referents refer (backward or forward) to things or people mentioned elsewhere in the text.
Forms of referents A. Pronouns B. Paraphrase (rewrite) e.g. The public in America is concerned about America’s crime rate The public in America is concerned about the country’s crime rate. C. Pro-verbs e.g. I told him to jump and he jumped. I told him to jump, and he did so.
D. ‘Inclusive” relatives e.g. He turned right. Turning right was wrong. • He turned right, which was wrong. E. Indicators e.g. the following as before the above rule the diagram below
WHY should we learn this skill? • It is the mark of a good reader that he/she recognizes, very quickly, what each referent in a text refers to. Good readers are also quick to recognize ambiguous referents, and have a techniquesfor dealing with them. When they meet them, they pause and re-read the sentence, then make a quick decision about the referent’s correct meaning. understand the text !!!
