  2. In Ancient Egypt… • - baskets are one of the world’s oldest forms of craft, dating back to Neolithic period 5,000 B.C • baskets were made from spiraling coiling made from tightly wrapped bundles of fibers • -had functional role but also aesthetic role

  3. -frequently adorned with ornamental or colored stitching • -geometric patterns such as Van Dyke and checkered were commons well as animal patterns • -dying the stitching, plaits, or threads is something that has carried on today

  4. In Ancient Peru… • -textiles have been woven for nearly 3,000 years • -were mostly highly prized possessions after gold • -produced on back strap looms • -produced in refinement long before ceramics

  5. Purposes: • -trading purposes • -commemorated attainment of certain societal rank (attaining adulthood) • -marked a person’s achievement or status
