Goals ofNEWMOVES To help overweight girls: • function in a thin-oriented society and feel good about themselves • avoid extreme behaviors aimed at weight loss • adopt healthy eating and physical activity behaviors leading to improved health status.
Components of NEWMOVES • Physical Education • Nutrition Education • Social Support • Follow-up Activities • Parent Involvement (postcards sent home)
History of NEWMOVES Needs Assessment in St. Paul School district indicated a need for school-based interventions for overweight adolescent girls (1996) Development and successful pilot testing of New Moves at Highland Park High School (1996-1999) Refinement and successful pilot-testing of New Moves at Southwest High School (1999) Full study in 3 intervention and 3 control schools to assess program effectiveness (2000-2001)
PHYSICAL EDUCATION • Focuses on life-long physical activity • Incorporates fun activities in a non-competitive atmosphere • Includes activities that are enjoyable and appropriate for all body types, such as: • Kickboxing • Yoga • Aerobics • Utilizes guest instructors from the community • Promotes current Minnesota graduation standards
NUTRITION EDUCATION • Focuses on life-long healthy eating skills • Emphasizes fruits and vegetables • Promotes eating in moderation and appropriate portion sizes • Looks at inappropriateness of fad diets and unhealthy dieting practices • “Teen-oriented” • Includes teen-specific food related information • Examines fast food options
SOCIAL SUPPORT • Focuses on enhancing self-esteem and body image • Examines the media’s influence on weight and body shape concerns • Investigates the concept of the “ideal woman” • Promotes self-acceptance & assertiveness • Provides tools for healthy stress reduction • Provides structure for peer-support
Preliminary Conclusions • Initial findings indicate strong interest and satisfaction with the program among students, parents, and staff. • Further analyses will indicate whether the program is effective in influencing attitudes, behaviors, and BMI.
