The Red Scare • November 1917 – Communist government established in Russia • Civilians feared a communist revolution in America. • Showed hatred for any foreigner • Public officials, the media, and business leaders all contributed to the Red Scare. • Strikes and labor unrest also contributed to internal fear.
The Palmer Raids • A. Mitchell Palmer – Wilson’s attorney general & lawyer • Positive that communists were trying to take over the world • After several terrorist attacks were linked to immigrants and anarchists, Palmer received $500,000 from Congress to gather information about radical activities. • In November 1919, Palmer staged raids on unions, Russians, and anarchists. • In the end more than 4,000 people were arrested and deported without warrants. • Created fear in many Americans
Sacco and Vanzetti Two Italian immigrants accused of murder. Extremely controversial court case during the Red Scare. Inconclusive evidence Sentenced to death by electric chair.
Sacco and Vanzetti Innocent or Guilty?
