BELLWORK • What was the Treaty of Versailles? • Why was Russia left out of this treaty? • What is an anarchist? • What were people’s views on immigrants at the time? • THINKER: At this time in history, why do you think it was so easy to blame communists, anarchists, immigrants or radicals for America’s problems?

  2. WWI CAUSE & EFFECT • To review everything that happened in WWI, you are going to create a cause & effect chart. • Do this on a blank sheet of paper. • Make sure to name AND describe each event. • This will be considered your WWI quiz • You may use your notes and book

The Red Scare • November 1917 – Communist government established in Russia • Civilians feared a communist revolution in America. • Showed hatred for any foreigner • Public officials, the media, and business leaders all contributed to the Red Scare. • Strikes and labor unrest also contributed to internal fear.

  4. The Palmer Raids • A. Mitchell Palmer – Wilson’s attorney general & lawyer • Positive that communists were trying to take over the world • After several terrorist attacks were linked to immigrants and anarchists, Palmer received $500,000 from Congress to gather information about radical activities. • In November 1919, Palmer staged raids on unions, Russians, and anarchists. • In the end more than 4,000 people were arrested and deported without warrants. • Created fear in many Americans

  6. Sacco and Vanzetti Two Italian immigrants accused of murder. Extremely controversial court case during the Red Scare. Inconclusive evidence Sentenced to death by electric chair.
