  1. DNA Discovery and Structure 12.1 and 12.2

  2. Hershey and Chase discovered which molecule transferred genetic material HOW?

  3. Protein contains sulfur (S) – coats virus • DNA contains phosphorus (P) – in virus

  4. 3) Only viruses with radioactive (P) passed this onto their host cells.

  5. Therefore DNA is passed on (genetic info).’ "cool" animation

  6. 3 Main Roles of DNA 1) Store genetic information (genes) 2) Copy genes for new cells (meiosis) 3) Transmit genes to next generation

  7. 12.2 DNA Name - DNA = de-oxy-ribo-nucleic acid - Ribose = 5 carbon sugar • De-oxy = missing one oxygen

  8. DNA = ladder shape Sides = phosphate and sugar groups (deoxyribose) Rungs = Nitrogen bases (4 types)

  9. The 4 nitrogen bases form ‘rungs’ (G) Guanine (C) Cytosine (T) Thymine (A) Adenosine

  10. Weak hydrogen “bonds” join G--C and A--T in rungs • Strong covalent bonds hold together the rest of the ladder • Erwin Chargaff’s Rule = base pairing • G joins with C • A joins with T

  11. Double Helix = twisted ladder • Antiparallel = two strands run in opposite directions

  12. Antiparallel - allows n-bases to bond
