They are useful for academic or management positions. Functional CVs focus on the skills or expertise required for a certain job.

A CV is not written in grammatically correct sentences, but in sentences where some linguistic elements have been deleted (gapped). This makes the CV more readable and less egocentric.
The linguistic elements most likely to be gapped are: • First person pronouns (I , we) • Auxiliary verbs (be, have, modal verbs) • Articles (a, the) • Relative clause elements (that, which) • Certain prepositional phrases • Some sentences/phrases are reduced to attributive noun groups.
Examples of gapped sentences in CVs: Original sentence: I can speak Spanish, French, and German. Gapped sentence: Languages spoken: Spanish, French, German.
Examples of gapped sentences in CVs: Original sentence: Between years 2000 and 2001, I was asked to design several web pages for Cuban radio networks. Gapped sentence: Designed web pages for Cuban radio networks (2000-2001).
