Mission Statement: Sea Shepherd's mission is to conserve and protect the world's marine wilderness eco-systems and marine wildlife species.
Carrying out the mission... Sea Shepherd acts through: • public education • investigation • documentation • enforcement (under authority of the United Nations World Charter for Nature) Sea Shepherd adheres to the utilization of non-violent principles and has taken a standard against violence in the protection of the oceans.
Sea Shepherd Campaigns... Priority campaign for the year: Objective is to hunt down the Japanese whaling fleet and harass, block, obstruct, and intervene against their illegal whaling operations.
Sea Shepherd Campaigns... Galapagos Islands: The commercial fishing ban(1997), is regularly violated by the huge Ecuadorian fishing fleet, foreign vessels, and independent operators. A series of coastal "no take" zones were established for the Marine Reserve this year, and must be enforced.
Sea Shepherd Campaigns... Seal Campaign: The Canadian commercial seal hunt is the largest mass slaughter of marine mammals in the world- (over 320,000 seals killed in March and April!) What we need to do now is to promote the international boycott of Canadian seafood products. • The slaughter of seals is incredibly cruel (a post mortem survey has shown that 42% of these babies are skinned alive) • It is a threat to the survival of the species • It is a threat to the survival of cod • It is a slaughter done mainly for unessential, vanity, and luxury items, and therefore, is unnecessary • It is unethical to slaughter newborn seal pups (About 95% of the seals to be slaughtered are babies less than four weeks old)
Sea Shepherd’s Success... • The success of the seal campaign and the ramming of the Sierra was the start of Sea Shepherd's historical 160 voyages over the next 2 decades, enforcing international laws where no law enforcement existed - on the high seas. • Sea Shepherd continues to accomplish its mission by upholding and enforcing international treaties, laws and conventions of world governments.
