What Was Developed? • 25,000 miles of navigable channels. • 238 locks at 192 locations. • Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. • Over 3,700 marine terminals. • Numerous recreational marinas. • Over 174,000 miles of rail connecting all 48 contiguous States, as well as Canada and Mexico. • Over 45,000 miles of interstate highway, supported by over 115,000 miles of other roadways. • Over 1,400 designated intermodal connections.
25,000 Miles Of Navigable Channels. • Navigable Channels are crucial to maintaining safe and efficient water-dependent transportation, commerce, and recreation.
238 locks at 192 locations. • A locks at locations are a lock system that lifts a ship up to the main elevation of canals.
Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. • The St. Lawrence Seaway is a combination of nature features, like the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River, as well as man-made canals, channels, and locks.
Over 3,700 marine terminals. • Marine Terminals was built in the late 1950s and was initially used to ship a wide range of commodities requiring covered warehouse space, including baled cotton, cotton seed, animal hides, newsprint, bulk copper ore, livestock, tallow and molasses.
Recreational Marinas. • There is a strong potential for marina waters to become contaminated with pollutants generated from the various activities that occur at marinas, such as boat cleaning, fueling operations, and marine head discharge, or from the entry of storm water runoff from parking lots and hull maintenance and repair areas into marina basins.
Over 174,000 Miles Of Rail Connecting All 48 Contiguous States, As Well As Canada And Mexico. • Miles of rail was built to help trading on land easier.
