How does wind energy work? • Like old fashioned windmills, today’s wind machines (also called wind turbines) use blades to collect the wind’s kinetic energy. The wind flows over the blades creating lift, like the effect on airplane wings, which causes them to turn. The blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric generator to produce electricity.
Advantages • It is a renewable source • There is no fuel • Less space • It does not pollute • Wind is free
Disadvantages • It’s expansive to make a turbine • Wind it self is not dependable • It take hundred or thousands are needed to produce enough energy • Kill’s bird’s • Makes a lot of noise
Fun Facts • An average wind speed of 14 miles per hour is needed to convert wind energy into electricity. • The largest wind turbine in the world, located in Hawaii, stands 20 stories tall and has blades the length of a football field. • Wind energy can be used in nearly 50 % of USA territory. • Wind energy can provide us with cleaner air and much healthier environment.
Why cant wind mills be in the city? because there is not much space for the wind mills and they need space A LOT OF SPACE.
