KS2 Literacy workshop 24th September 2014
Aims • To share ways in which reading can be developed at home • To share strategies on how writing can be improved at home
In 2013, The National Literacy Trust conducted a survey which included 11,000 children. Children who read daily outside school were 5x more likely to perform above the expected level for their age in reading.
Reading at home • Reading aloud for a minimum of 20 minutes a day • Breaking reading into manageable chunks • Discussing texts- the front cover, chapter titles, the language • Using question stems • Using the homework diary
Question stems to use • What do you think is happening here? • How does..... feel at this point? • How do you know...? • What clues are given to show... • What does the verb ....... suggest about .........? • True or false.... • How did ............ feelings/attitudes change in this chapter/paragraph? • Choose a word to describe ............. why did you pick that word?
Reading in school • Accelerated Reader and competitions • Encouraging reading for pleasure through ERIC • Reading in registration • Listening to children read • Teaching reading strategies • Teacher/pupil dialogue about books
Writing in school • Spelling, punctuation, grammar • Planning, editing, proof-reading and drafting processes • Modelled texts • Sharing examples of students’ work • Learning how to structure different texts- e.g. diary, newspaper report etc.
Below age-related expectations Dear diary Today I was cutting some wood I hoped I’d get twenty pounds so I went to my boss to ask for a raise but he would’nt have any of it, so he just decided to kick me out of the buisiness. So I decided to look for another job. I was very furious at my boss, but then suddenly I heard a scream from a little cottage up the hill by the mill. I ran to the little cottage and peacked through the window and seen a big bad wolf.
This could be improved by.... • Some simple connectives • ( and, so, but). • This student could be encouraged to use better connectives. For example, using however instead of but. • The work could be checked through for full stops & commas. Commas need to be added before connectives like ‘but’ and ‘so.’ • Improving sentence openers with adverbs would improve this piece of work too. age-related expectations Want to be the height of fashion? Then order these now! Holes is a comfortable but fashionable shoe; read on to find out why to order a pair of these brain-blowing shoes! Breathing is no problem, to feet, while your wearing holes, tiny little air spaces let your feet breath freely. Comfortable walking soles pad your feet while on the go making you feel a new bouncy spring in your step. As well as the comfortable padding they come in eye-blasting colours for every occasion. ‘These shoes are great for my constant training; I’m really going for gold in these.’ quoted Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis.
age-related expectations • Some ambitious adjectives like ‘brain-blowing’ have been used, however, the word ‘comfortable’ is repeated 3 times. Synonyms could be used instead or other ambitious adjectives. • Proper nouns need to have capital letters. • Inaccurate grammar ‘ why to order.’ If read out loud, the error can be heard instantly. This sentence could be re-written.. Want to be the height of fashion? Then order these now! Above age-related expectations Should children choose their own bedtime? In Maths we have been working on a data project on what time children go to bed. In years 5 and 6, 76% of children, in this school, have a set bedtime (mean is 8.30pm), whilst 24% don’t. We asked children in years 5 and 6 if they should be free to choose their own bedtime or should they leave it to adults to decide. This is what they thought. On one hand, some children think they should get to choose because it gives them more idea of how to be responsible and it lets them show they can be trusted.
Above age-related expectations This student uses a good range of punctuation, they should be encouraged to use semi-colons, dashes, and the full range. A wider range of subordinate connectives could be used to further enhance the work- for example, despite, since etc. A wider range of devices could be used to support the text- anecdotes, list of three, quotes from authority figures etc. Should children choose their own bedtime?
