  2. Reading in KS2 Generally by the time children reach KS2 they are starting to become confident, fluent readers. It might seem that they ‘can read’ but this is only the beginning…

  3. How we teach reading in school • Shared reading (whole class) • Guided reading (groups) • One-to-one reading (individuals)

  4. Helping children to develop reading confidence • Read often to your child and have fun • Read without being distracted • Read and reread stories • Make predictions • Enjoy the illustrations. • Talk about the authors and illustrators • Talk about characters, plot and setting • Discuss preferences for authors and genres • Discuss issues arising from the book and feelings and opinions about it.

  5. Discuss similarities and differences between stories. • Alternate reading • Read poems to/with your child. • Listen to recorded stories, on CD, on I-Pod etc.

  9. Application skills: make links between stories • Can you relate this story to another with a similar theme? • Which type of stories start like this one? • What other way could the author have……?

  10. Analysis : children are required to imply implicit meanings and make deductions • What words give you that impression? • What was the author’s intention? • What evidence is there to support your view? • Why did the author decide to…………..?

  11. Synthesis : gather evidence from the text • Can you invent a new title for this story? • How would you adapt………….? to create a different……………..? • How could you change the plot to……………?

  12. Evaluation: Presenting and defending opinions by making judgements and explaining preferences • What is your opinion of……………..? • Justify your opinion. • Could the story be improved? How? • Is this a successful story? • Would it be better if……………?
