The Glow Stick Inquiry Lab Students will design and conduct a scientific investigation.
What makes a glow stick glow? • “Specifically, the chemical reaction works like this: The hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the phenyl oxalate ester, to form phenol and an unstable peroxyacid ester. The unstable peroxyacid ester decomposes, resulting in phenol and a cyclic peroxy compound. The cyclic peroxy compound decomposes to carbon dioxide. This decomposition reaction releases the energy that excites the dye.”
Who left the light on? • Studies have shown that certain fish are attracted to glowing light while swimming in darkness. • Fishing spots are using this to their advantage.
Purpose of the lab. • A fishing company has asked you help create a new lure using glow sticks. • Your lab group is to design an experiment to figure out what conditions this lure would be most effective.
Question? • What is the relationship between temperature and the amount of light given off by a glow stick?
Experiment Variables Independent variable – what is manipulated [changed] in the experiment Dependent variable – changes in response to the independent variable Control – a standard used for comparison Constant – a variable that does not change when other variables change
Today’s Objective • In your groups you must agree on a hypothesis for this experiment. • You must provide a list of materials you will need. • You must describe what safety equipment and procedures you will require. • You must write a detailed list of procedures in order to carry out your experiment safely and effectively.
Suggested materials…. • Water • Glow sticks (no more than 4) • Beakers/Flasks • Beaker tongs • Hot plates • Ice • Thermometers • Stopwatches • Additional supplies will be available with teacher approval!
