DBQ Thesis Statements • The thesis statement is the most important single part of the DBQ essay, so keep the following in mind… • The thesis is the main idea that you will develop in your answer, so make sure it clearly states exactly what you will prove in your essay • Your thesis must respond directly to all aspects of the question, not just one part • Your thesis must make a claim that you can back up with evidence from the primary sources
DBQ Essay Structure • If your thesis statement is a guide for how you interpret the evidence, your body paragraphs are where you actually interpret the evidence. Keep the following in mind… • Each paragraph should explain a different subtopic or key idea that proves your thesis • Each paragraph should be built around details and quotes from the primary sources that prove your thesis • Each paragraph should elaborate on the evidence with explanations of the details and quotes that show why the evidence backs up the thesis
