Lesson 1 Getting the message through listening
1.What is interpreting? As a common understanding, interpreting is the act of reproducing a speech orally from one language to another. “Interpreting consists in presentation in the target language (TL), the exact meaning of what is uttered in the source language (SL) either consecutively or simultaneously, preserving the tone of the speaker.” (Bell, 1991)
2.Features of interpreting • Working condition • Working way • Criteria: preciseness, smoothness, speed
3.Types of interpreting • two basic types: consecutive interpreting simultaneous interpreting • other types: relay interpreting, sight interpreting, etc.
Basic requirements for interpreters • A good mastery of the working languages • Encyclopedic knowledge • The interpreting skills • Remarkable memory • Fast learning and using knowledge • Physical and psychological competence
Thoughts Sharing • words≠information The interpreter has to understand ideas, not words. The interpreter must listen and keep asking, “ What does the speaker mean?” The first key to understand a speech is the identification of the main idea, the second is the analysis of the links between those ideas.
Thoughts Sharing • “A good interpreter does not grow on a tree.” (Heynold) • “An interpreter is an actor.” (Gile)
