ISM Model • Early on, ISM adopted an Inquiry Project based curriculum model using both the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) and teacher designed units based on the research work of Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe (Understanding by Design) .
BIG IDEAS • Backward Design • Meaningful learning for all students
3 Stages of Backward Design 1. Identify desired results 2. Determine assessment 3.Plan learning activities
Stage 1- Desired Results • Central Idea/Ensduring Understanding (at ISM our goal at this stage is to develop a univeral standard example: “Revolution” rather than “ US Revolutionary War”) • Using the state standard as a guide, develop Essential questions • Determine what students will know, understand and be able to demonstrate
Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence By determining what the students need to know, you can easily plan out the performance tasks and key criteria on which the students will be evaluated. • Each essential question is linked to a performance task. • A performance task is what you want the students to be able to do to show understanding of the concepts taught. • Key criteria is what your students need to know in order to be able to complete those performance tasks.
Stage 3 - Learning Plan • With the performance tasks in mind, the teacher designs activities and lesson geared to each essential question. • Ideally, each unit should be well integrated with Art, Music, Drama, Spanish and PE.
Essential Questions • What are they?
The Ideal ISM Student • Self Regulation • Self Motivation • Inquirer • Considerate • Reflective • Life long Learner • Compassionate
The Ideal ISM Teacher • Flexible • Collaborative • Life Long Learner • Creative • Kind • Reflective • Self Motivated • Dedicated
The Ideal ISM Parent • Participatory • Hands On • Active Participant in Child’s Education • Committed to the School’s Success (including financial support)
