  5. How High School Works Semestering • All grade 10 students must take 8 courses (4 per semester) 1st semester: Sept to Jan – write exams 2nd semester: Feb to June – write exams Classes • 4 courses every day (75 min. each) • Every class will have a different set of students

How High School Works Passing or Failing • If your student fails a course, it doesn’t mean they fail the year, it just means they may have to take that course again • All students need to meet the Nova Scotia Graduation Requirements in order to graduate (this will be explained later). These requirements have nothing to do with what they want to be when they grow up.

Allen offers support for students having academic difficulties - just like junior high: • Resource: If your student requires adaptations to meet course outcomes • Learning Center: If your student requires a program plan with individualized outcomes • ESL Resource: If your student’s first language is not English. • Peer Tutoring: If your student would benefit from help from other students

  12. Programs The following special programs are available at CPA: • International Baccalaureate • Grade 11 entry point • English/Bilingual/FI certificate available • Options and Opportunities • Grade 10 entry point • French Immersion

International Baccalaureate The IB Diploma Program is an international program that develops learners to be literate, articulate, and confident with an understanding of global issues and other cultures. The IB program develops students who are: • inquirers and critical thinkers, • open-minded and reflective • willing to take on challenges • communicators who interact readily and effectively with others • committed, motivated and organized

  14. International Baccalaureate IB Diploma graduates receive excellent recognition from universities in Canada, and around the World. If your child wishes to complete the IB Diploma Program they should take the preparatory courses offered in grade 10 - coded as Diploma Prep. This doesn’t mean they have to take IB in grade 11. IB Prep – English Stream • English 10 DP or English 10 FY (Music students) • French 10 DP or Français Immersion 10F • History 10 DP • Math 10 DP – full year (counts as 2 credits) • Science 10 DP • Visual Art 10 or Drama 10 or Music 10 or Dance 11 • Pal 11 or Phys. Ed 10 or Yoga 11 or Martial Arts 11 orDance 11 Students interested in IB Art in grade 11/12 should take Visual Art 10.

IB Prep – French Stream • English 10 DP or English 10 FY (Music students) • Français Immersion 10F • Histoire Ancient 10F • Mathematiques 10 DP – full year (counts as 2 credits) • Sciences 10F DP • Visual Art 10 or Dramatique 10F or Music 10 or Dance 11 • Pal 11 or Phys. Ed 10 or Yoga 11 or Martial Arts 11 or Dance 11 Students interested in IB Art in grade 11/12 should take Visual Art 10.

  17. Options and Opportunities O2 is a program designed to help students work toward a career or occupation in learning contexts which provide linkages to the workplace. Community Based Learning is an important part of O2, allowing students to explore a variety of careers. Students go on work placements during the school year, and take a number or courses designed to assist them in the market place.

Options and Opportunities O2 is appropriate for if your student: • Wishes to explore or develop skills in a community setting • Is interested in a career in the trades/entrepreneurship • Prefers hands-on learning opportunities • Prefers smaller class sizes Interviews will occur later in the school year. French Immersion • Students must complete at least 9 French Immersion (FI) credits in order to receive a French Immersion certificate • FI courses are also designed to be suitable as diploma prep courses for the IB program • Students in FI must complete the following courses in each of the following years: Français 10 – Grade 10 Français 11 – Grade 11 Français 12 – Grade 12

  20. French Immersion Credits In addition to Francais 10, 11, 12, the following FI credits are available. Grade 10 students should select 4 of the following: • Sciences 10F • Histoire Ancienne 10F • Dramatique, Arts 10F • Mathematiques 10 – 2 Crds • Biologie 11F Courses currently offered for grade 11 and 12 students • Histoire Canadienne 11F • Histoire Planetaire 12F

Picking Courses You should discuss course selection with your student – you will access to Power School to change things up (for a limited time – usually until March break) Explore the Course Selection Handbook (soon to be on-line). It includes: • Details on NS Grad Requirements • List of all courses offered at CPA Consider your students academic ability – strengths and weaknesses - when selecting courses - ask the teachers (math recommendation) Consider their career goals - university, community college, etc

  22. Academic Planning Students/Parents can explore career and post-secondary options by: • Visiting their guidance counsellor • Exploring internet resources such as: www.careercruising.com user name: cpahs password: careers

  23. Academic Planning Due to the diverse entrance requirements of post-secondary institutions, students should develop an academic plan that is both realistic and attainable. Nova Scotia High School graduation requirements are not aligned with post-secondary requirements. This non-alignment becomes a bigger factor in a students grade 11 and 12 year.

  24. Nova Scotia Graduation Requirements 18 credits are required to graduate from High School • 13 are compulsory credits • 5 are elective credits – over and above the 13 Maximum 7 grade 10 coded credits Ex: History 10, Math 10 Minimum 5 grade 12 coded credits Ex: Chemistry 12, Law 12

  25. 13 Compulsory Credits • 3 English • 2 Math • 2 Science • 2 Other (Technology or extra Math/ Science) • 1 Fine Arts • 1 Physical Education • 1 Canadian Studies • 1 Global Studies Your student will be picking at least 5compulsory credits in grade 10

  26. Compulsory Credits -English- 3 credits, one from each grade level Courses available for grade 10 students: • English 10 (also full year with music) • English 10 Diploma Prep

Compulsory Credits -Physical Education- 1 required credit selected in grade 10: • Dance 11 – They just gotta Dance * (Counts as either a physedor a fine arts credit but not both) • Martial Arts 11 – They want to learn some basic Martial Arts and get in shape. • Physical Education 10 - They want to develop skills - available in all male and all female classes • Physically Active Living 11 - non threatening Gym Class • Yoga 11- They want to be more bendy (and less stressed)

  28. Compulsory Credits -Mathematics- 2 required Math credits: one in grade 10 and one in grade 11 Courses available for grade 10 students: • Math Essentials 10 (Graduation) • Math at Work 10 (Graduation) • Math 10/Mathematiques 10F (Academic) • Math 10 Diploma Prep(Academic)

  29. 2013 Grade 10 Math Courses Students who enroll in Mathematics 10 and Mathematics at Work 10 will write a final exam provided by the Department of Education

Routes through High School Math If they want to obtain a High School diploma and then: • Enter the workforce or an apprenticeship program • Apply to Community or private College(most programs) • Apply to a Bachelor of Arts program at most universities Needs: 2 math credits from different grade levels Math Essentials 10 and 11or Math at Work 10 and 11 or Math 10 and Math 11

Routes through High School Math If they want to obtain a High School diploma and then: • Apply to Community or private College (some programs) • Apply to University for a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Nursing, or Bachelor of Health Science (some programs) Needs: 3 academic math credits, 1 from each grade Math 10, Math 11 and Math 12

Routes through High School Math If they want to obtain a High School diploma and then: • Apply to University for a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Computing Science, Bachelor of Commerce (some), or Bachelor of Health Science (some) Needs: 4 math credits. Math 10, Math 11, Pre-Calculus Math 11, & Pre-Calculus 12 Calculus 12 is an optional math course taken in grade 12.

Your student must pick a Math • Math Essentials 10 – want to learn real world math and develop skills that are required for the workplace • Math at Work 10 – You find grade 9 math really hard and you won’t need math to get into any post-secondary program • Math 10/Mathematiques 10F- You want to keep your options open and you are good at math. You must pass grade 9 math to take Math 10. • Math 10 Diploma Prep– You are planning to enter the IB program

Compulsory Credits -Science- 2 required credits • 1 required credit selected in grade 10: • Science 10 or Science 10 Diploma Prep • Sciences 10F or Sciences 10F Diploma Prep • 1 other science course They can pick a 2nd science in grade 10 • Biology 11/Biologie11F - They are REALLY good at science and you are planning on taking Sciences/Engineering in university

Compulsory Credits -Fine Arts- 1 required credit selected in grade 10 • Dance 11 – You just gotta Dance * (Counts as either a Phys Ed or a fine arts credit but not both) • Drama 10 – they don’t mind getting up in front of the class • Dramatique, Arts 10 – they don’t mind getting up in front of the class in French • Music 10 - they are currently in band • Visual Arts 10 - like to draw and paint

  37. Compulsory Credits ~Other~ 2 required credits from either: • Technology • Science – above the 2 required compulsory science credits • Math – above the 2 required compulsory math credits Grade 10 students may or may not select a technology credit

  38. Compulsory Credits ~Canadian Studies~ One required credit from either: • Canadian History/Histoire Canadienne • African Canadian Studies • Mi’kmaw Studies The Canadian Studies credit is completed in the students Grade 11 year.

  41. What Happens When • Students can input your courses into power school within the next few weeks. This maybe done at school, but can be done (changed) at home for a short time period. • If you need to change any of your courses after you that, please talk to your JH counsellor. They will pass on the information to us. • Course changes after May are often difficult unless the failure of a course occurs.
