CIA Program Inquiry Committee Updates • Review profiles of successful graduates • Career & Tech Center • Special Education (Fox Meadow, Pines Bridge, Walden) • Curriculum Center • Walkabout
Book Review • In terms of CIA, • Are we living on a melting iceberg or an iceberg that could melt? How do you know? • Do we need to change? Why or why not? • How do we go about changing?
Book Review • How do the characters in the story support effective change? Fred, Louis, Alice, Bobby, Jordan, NoNo, Sally Jane, Scouts • Why are these characters/roles important for change to occur? • Do you know people like them? Could you tap people to take on these important roles? • What would happen as a result?
Book Review • Set the Stage (CIA Superintendent’s Initiative) • 1 – Create a sense of urgency (reduce complacency, help others see the need for change and the importance of acting immediately) • 2 – Pull together the guiding team (make sure there is a powerful group guiding the change – one with leadership skills, credibility, communications ability, authority, analytical skills, and a sense of urgency) • Decide what to do (CIA Network Team) • 3 – Develop the change vision and strategy (clarify how the future will be different from the past, and how you can make that future a reality, create a new vision for the future)
Book Review • Make it happen (CIA Program Inquiry Teams) • 4 - Communication for understanding and buy-in (make sure as many others as possible understand and accept the vision and the strategy) • 5 – Empower others to act (remove as many barriers as possible so that those who want to make the vision a reality can do so) • 6 – Produce short term wins (create some visible, unambiguous successes as soon as possible) • 7 – Don’t let up (Press harder and faster after the first successes. Be relentless with initiating change after change until the vision is a reality)
Book Review • Make it stick (CIA Network Committee priorities & goals) • “Establish a systemic BOCES-wide culture that unifies instructional programs and creates a synergy for continuous instructional improvement “ • 8 – Create a new culture (hold on to the new ways of behaving and make sure they succeed until they become strong enough to replace old traditions)
CIA Network Committee – Next Steps • 2011-2012: • Apply information gathered on profiles of successful graduates (wordle – profile – rubric – goals – benchmarks) • Respond to Dr. Langlois’ 4 essential questions • Identify curriculum, instruction and/or assessment goal(s) • Schedule visits to learn about other programs and departments • Assess outcomes • RTTT Core Turnkey Training for District Teams • 6 volunteers to attend training on 9/16 (8:30-11:30) and 10/14, 11/18, 12/16 (8:30-3:00)
Essential Questions for 2011-12 • What does real excellence in our jobs look like? • How do we know whether we are growing toward achieving this standard of excellence? • What feedback, support and resources do we need to ensure continued growth toward excellence? • How does what we do contribute to the excellence of BOCES as we pursue our mission?
Feedback Loop • Striving for excellence! CIA Network & Program Inquiry Committee Work Professional Learning Communities Change in culture, practices and outcomes • Are we achieving the CIA’s purpose? • How do we know? • What evidence do we have? • What evidence do we need?
True Accountability • Accountability – true accountability – comes from within. We are accountable when we have embraced our responsibilities with all of our heart, when we have integrated ourselves so deeply in our work, into the lives and futures of our children, that our dreams include our dreams for them. ~ Dr. James Langlois, Superintendent of Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES
Reflection • As a CIA network committee member, name 1 thing from today’s meeting that you will do to further implement the CIA’s mission in the coming year. • Mission: • Establish a systemic BOCES-wide culture that unifies instructional programs and creates a synergy for continuous instructional improvement.
