  1. Verb Pretest There will be things in the test that are unfamiliar to you. Make the best educated guess. THIS IS ONLY A PRETEST!!!!!

  2. Subject & Predicate • Copy the sentence. Underline the subject of the sentence. Highlight the predicate. Which word separates the subject from the predicate? Every Tuesday, Marvin travels to the city for his job.

  3. Definition of a Verb • A verb is an action word Or • A verb is a state of being • Singular— is, am and are • Plural—was and were

  4. Linking Verbs • A verb that connects a subject with a word in the predicate that describes or identifies the subject. Ex. I don’t feel very well. Ex. I am a teacher. ***Ex. The job you did looks really professional. • Forms of the verb Be and other linking verbs See charts on pg. 319-320 in Writing Coach Other linking verbs: might be, shall have been, become, seem, feel, look, taste, etc.

  5. Helping Verbs • HVs are added before another verb. They help determine the tense of the main verb in the sentence. • Verb phrase—includes the helping verb and main verb • See charts on pg. 324-325 of Writing Coach

  6. Helping & main verbs • Copy the sentence below. Circle the helping verb and highlight the main verb. Mrs. Williams has given the students an extra day to rehearse.

  7. Say WHAT Mrs. Williams?!!! Direct objectsIndirect Objects • DIRECT OBJECT MEANS… the noun/pronoun in the sentence that gets/receives the action from the main verb Ex. Victoria gave the message to Martina.

Indirect objects OBJECTS OF PREPOSITIONSAnswers the questions—To / For whom or what? • INDIRECT OBJECT MEANS... the noun/pronoun that names the person or thing to which something is given or done for Ex. Victoria gave Martina a message. • OBJECTS OF PREPOSITIONS…noun/pronoun that follows a preposition to or for in a sentence Ex. Victoria gave a message to Martina.

  9. Transitive & intransitive verbs Transitive Intransitive Sends action to noun in the predicate (direct object) Ex: Jennifer plays beautiful music. when a verb CANNOT/DOES NOT have an object to send action to Ex: Jennifer plays beautifully.
