Almondbury High School Summer School 19th – 22nd August 2013
Each morning we all did energiser activities and icebreaker games to get us ready for the day ahead
We all created our shields on our first morning with some interesting information about ourselves – what we like!
Learning metaphors – the children were shown pictures and asked how learning is like…… • A mountain – “because you need determination to get to your destination” (Liam), because you need to persevere to get to where you are going” (Jackson), “because you rise higher and to the next level the more you do” (Alex) • Going to the Dentist – “because sometimes it is scary but if you don’t do it you’ll regret it” (Tonayah) • A game – “because in a game you sometimes win and other times you lose – it’s the same with learning as sometimes it’s easy and other times it’s hard” (Sophie) • Rubbish – “because it can be boring but it does help you to have a better future” (Jennifer),
More Learning Metaphors the children made up…. • Learning is like knitting a jumper as you can make so many different things by knitting and by picking up the stitches in your life you can achieve your goal. (Sophie) • Learning is a mask because learning can be mysterious and exciting and you wonder what it is all about (Alex) • Learning is a mask because sometimes you might feel ashamed to learn and think people are picking on your for learning so you might want to hide. (Kasie). (A small selection – all children contributed at least one)!
We took part in drama workshops centred around the Shakespearean Story of MacbethPractising our parts…..
We also got chance to take part in the Chocolate Dream activity, by producing our own chocolate products…
And by designing and making packaging for our finished chocolate product…
A World Feast Challenge game was organised to develop teamwork and leadership skills
Working together to share and trade resources for their individual countries
The children had healthy lunches each day with salads and new international foods to try….like Olives, Humus and Pates.
Alongside the main activities …. The children took part in business challenges – to see if they could gain a profit from a £1 investment!!
At the end of the week…. • The children were an absolute delight to have on the Summer School this week • All the adults involved have had a really enjoyable week • Everyone took part and got fully involved in ALL of our activities. • We wish you a smooth, calm and happy transition to Almondbury High School on Tuesday 3rd September. • Please can we all Thank the staff who have run the week.
