« Summer school » Some inputs for introducing the discussion Patrick Le Dû (CEA and IN2P3/CNRS) p.ledu@ipnl.in2p3.fr Santa Fe-ADCOM
Purpose and context of this initiative • I was invited to give several lectures in various ‘local’ summer schools in the past few years and specially last year in Beijing and Ukraine, and realized how this kind of event can be efficient to promote and make visible our NPSS society and promote our conferences for the future generation of students and may be members. • Such 'summer schools' are in great development in the 'news countries' like India, China, Vietnam, Brazil ...... • In these events, help of experienced scientists like we have in our TC’s are greatly required and appreciated. • I think that NPSS should not forget this important evolution and have a way to establish some stable relationship with these schools organizers. • We had a discussion with our TNC colleagues after the Valencia TNC meeting and in our last TNC teleconference. Some words about summer schools to avoid confusion! • There are a lot since long time well established • Ex: I was involved in the CERN School Of Computing as local organizor in Saint Malo (France - in 2005) • 80 international ‘selected’ students --> 70 from ‘emerging countries’ like eastern europ, asia, latin america , north africa, india … • 2 weeks fully supported (travel, food and logging) • 15 ‘teachers’ and organizors plus 40 computers • Big financial support of CERN-EU and France (CEA) ---> NOT OUR priority target ! But I have already some close contacts with the ICFA management (Ariella Cattai - instrumentation schools.) • Evolution --> toward a more and more topical schools in ‘industrial emerging countries’ with the objective to reach a large ‘local student’ audience • Less expensive and less organization • Mixure of ‘local teachers’ and some international‘eminent scientists’ ---> This is really where we should go and get a lot of benefit for our society ! Santa Fe-ADCOM
120 ‘chinese’ students from various country institutes /universities • 5 days • 5 ‘external teachers’` • 2 EU,3 US • All regularly attendees of NSS-MIC conf…. • English/chinese language • One of the outcome of this for RT12 ! • 36 abstracts collected from China ! Santa Fe-ADCOM
Discussion and analyze in the TNC • Positive outcome • Alessandro Paccagnella (R8- Italy, Padova, Radiation Effects) • Christoph Ilgner (R8 – Germany, Dresden Rossendorf Helmoltz Inst) • Gabriella Hoff (R9 - Brazil, Porto Allegre) • Anatoly Rozenfeld (R10 – Australia Sydney) • Zhen An Liu (R10) • Masa Nomachi (R10) • All are all involved in some specific event • Suggestion • to support by sending NPSS ‘distinguished teachers’ Santa Fe-ADCOM
How to do that ? • Start an informal discussion with Steve Gold (Chapter DL) • Why not to have a similar DL for these schools ? • Should be specific and associated to a ‘selected’ event or a pool of permanent ‘teachers ? • Questions ? • Selected by whom ? • What could be the role of TC’s ? • What is the role of TNC • Need to experience some ‘pilot projects’ in 2013/14 • Suggestion: Need a motion to extende DL program (Steve) to this! Santa Fe-ADCOM
Toward few ‘pilot project’ • 2012 ---> too early ??? But ? • 2013 • Latin America (Gabriella Hoff) --> Medical Physics • Start to make contact with local scientific and technical organizations…. • China --> second edition of the Beijing Topical Seminar (ZA Liu) • 2014 - we are working to an Asia/Pacific ‘electronics instrumentation’ summer school in Osaka University (Japan) --> join Japan-China-Korea institutes • Preliminary discussion with Masa Nomachi (RT14 Chair), Yifang Wang/Zhen An Liu (IHEP-Beijing) and Korea ( G.Cho - 2013 NSS chair) • Week before or after the Real Time Conference (June 2014) Santa Fe-ADCOM
