Safe Communities America Program for Kentucky • This effort is supported by the KY Safety and Prevention Alignment Network (KSPAN) which serves as the Injury Community Planning Group for KY. • KSPAN is a diverse coalition working to improve Kentucky’s core capacity to perform injury surveillance and epidemiology, and to implement and evaluate evidence-based injury prevention and control programs.

Injuries In Kentucky • Injuries kill more Kentuckians every year between the ages of 1 and 44 than heart disease, cancer, stroke and HIV combined. • From 2000 to 2005, Kentucky had the 6th highest rate of unintentional injury deaths in the United States, with the leading causes being motor vehicle crashes, poisoning (including drug overdoses) and falls.

  6. Culture of Safety What is this thing called culture? Culture is a combination of : • Attitudes,  • Behaviors,  • Beliefs,  • Values,  • Ways of doing things, and • Other shared characteristics of a particular group of people. Culture Can: • Socialize newcomers. • Define influence. • Determine values. When these criteria are consistently and effectively aimed at accident reduction, a positive culture of safety is created

  7. Safe Communities • Concept of a safe community recognizes that no single approach to injury prevention and safety promotion can be as effective as a collaboration among community organizations and community members.

  8. KY Injury Prevention & Research Center(KIPRC) Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center was designated as an Affiliate Support Center at the CDC/Safe States Conference on May 4, 2012.

  9. Concept for the Kentucky Safe Communities America Affiliate Support Center • Assist local communities in developing capacity for injury and violence prevention. • Provide injury data, training, technical assistance, and other forms of support to communities that are interested in achieving Safe Community designation. • Communities across Kentucky will form the Kentucky Safe Communities America Network to address the burden of injuries and violence. • KSPAN will support communities in their quest to be designated as Safe Communities and in doing the hard work necessary to earn this recognition.

Concept for Kentucky • Establish a statewide network of designated Safe Communities • Link communities that are serious about and dedicated to safety and injury prevention. • Provide leadership and act as a mentor to communities interested in SCA designation • Maximize our collective impact on reducing the burden of injuries and violence on our state. • KIPRC serves as an affiliate Safe Communities Support Center and will partner with KSPAN members on community level implementations of evidence based interventions.

  11. Seven Indicators of a Safe Community Indicators established by the WHO Collaborating Center for Community Safety Promotion, KarolinskaInstitutet, Stockholm, Sweden. • 1. Demonstrate an infrastructure based on partnership and collaborations, governed by a cross- sectional group that is responsible for safety promotion in their community Versus Indicators for LHD IVPP 1. The local health department (LHD) has a designated, functioning program responsible for providing leadership and coordination for injury and violence prevention (IVP) efforts.

  12. Seven Indicators of a Safe Community Indicators established by the WHO Collaborating Center for Community Safety Promotion, KarolinskaInstitutet, Stockholm, Sweden. 2. Long-term, sustainable programs covering both genders and all ages, environments, situations, and includes preparing their citizens for emergencies and disasters; Versus Indicators for a LHD IVPP 2. The local health department focuses efforts on obtaining funding to support and sustain its injury and violence prevention efforts.

  13. Seven Indicators of a Safe Community Indicators established by the WHO Collaborating Center for Community Safety Promotion, KarolinskaInstitutet, Stockholm, Sweden. 3. Programs that target high-risk groups and environments, and programs that promote safety for vulnerable groups; Versus Indicators for a LHD IVPP 3. The local health department injury and violence prevention program develops, implements, and evaluates an organizational plan to address injury and violence locally.

The local health department utilizes evidence based or evidence informed programs to prevent injury and violence locally

Programs that document the frequency and causes of injuries; Versus Indicators for a LHD IVPP 5. The local health department utilizes data to inform and strengthen its capacity to prevent injury and violence locally

  16. Seven Indicators of a Safe Community Indicators established by the WHO Collaborating Center for Community Safety Promotion, KarolinskaInstitutet, Stockholm, Sweden. 6. Implement evaluation measures to assess their programs, processes and the effects of change Versus Indicators for a LHD IVPP 6. The local health department injury and violence prevention program evaluates the effectiveness of its injury and violence prevention programs and services

Ongoing participation in national and international Safe Communities networks. Versus Indicators for a LHD IVPP 7. The local health department injury and violence prevention program develops and maintains partnerships with key local, regional and state organizations.

  19. Safe Communities America Program for Kentucky The National Safety Council, KY Injury Prevention & Research Center, and University of Kentucky, College of Public Health have come together to develop a Safe Communities America Network for Kentucky.

Since our designation, the opportunity to reach new community partners about injury prevention has increased significantly.”
