Life Sharing When People Matter More than Systems
Onondaga Community Living • Began supporting people in life sharing situations in the early 90’s • Provides 1:1 personalized support residentially, vocationally, academically, socially • Separate services from housing. Each home in the person’s name. • Support 25 different arrangements of community people sharing homes and lives with people we support • Now have long standing relatiooships surpassing 15 years.
Sharing Life • People want to live with an associate with people who • Share common interests • Have commonalities with • Can be looked up to • That treat you as an equal • That challenge you to be the best you can be • That have other gifts and interests • That can share in a reciprocal relationship • That can see you personal gifts • That is not dependent on service provision but instead on true relationships, friendships and ultimate love
Deepening Relationships • As relationships flourish, new dimensions develop • People take personal control over their own loves and the lives of those closest to them • People grow in relationship with one another through – time, hard ache, celebrations • People become more equal with one another • People learn from and grow together
Where Can People Be Found? • From sharing common interests • From becoming a regular at places of interest • From being known by others in your community • From those who are your champions • From current relationships and support circles • From Family and friends • From Paid staff you have knows • From Churches and community groups • By looking back into your life • Neighborhood connections • Advertising for common interests • Community Newspapers and flyers • Advertisements based on who the person is • By Asking!
An Advertisement • I am a woman with a disability who has been living in my parents home. I am now going to college and will be moving into my own apartment for the first time. I am looking for someone in a similar circumstance that may be interested in sharing my home. I can off free rent in return for some minor support and companionship. Please call 555-5555
Changing Roles • As we begin to understand what is fundamentally important in the loves of people and use that as a guide for support, the nature of support will change • When we begin to use normal life as the guide, the look of the system with change • The move from Paid roles to roles of supports lives in true relationships • Community life will be nurtured and accepted • Community relationships will be recognized and nurtured • Separateness will begin to be mineralized
