Congress Hunts for Communists • Truman makes it against the law to teach or advocate the violent overthrow of the U.S. government- SMITH ACT • HUAC- House Un-American Activities Committee- investigated possible suspects and held trials trying to convict guilty spies/communists • Investigated educators, film stars, writers, average Americans • Anyone said to be suspicious was “Black listed”
Spy Cases • The HUAC focused on finding Soviet spies • The most famous case was the arrest of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. • The Rosenberg's were charged with conspiring to give nuclear information to the Soviets • They were electrocuted in 1953 • Controversial case
McCarthyism • In the early 1950’s Americans were very worried about national security • Senator Joseph McCarthy took advantage of this fear and helplessness • He claimed the State Department was filled with communists agents • McCarthyism: a new catchword for extreme, reckless charges • McCarthyism and the Red Scare declined around 1954
