  1. Paradigms & Principles WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

  2. Top 10 All-Time Stupid Quotes • The following ten quotes were made many years ago by experts in their fields. At the time they were said they sounded intelligent. With the passing of time, they sound idiotic.

  3. #10 “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home.” -Kenneth Olsen, President and Founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, in 1977

  4. #9 “Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value.” -Marshal Ferdinand Foch, French Military Strategist and Future World War I Commander, in 1911

  5. #8 “[Man will never reach the moon] regardless of all future scientific advances.” -Dr. Lee De Forest, Inventor of the Audion Tube and Father of Radio, on February 25, 1967

  6. #7 “[Television] won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” -Darryl F. Zanuck, Head of 20th Century-Fox, in 1946

  7. #6 “We don’t like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out.” -Decca Records as they rejected The Beatles, in 1962

  8. #5 “For the majority of people, the use of tobacco has a beneficial effect.” -Dr. Ian G. MacDonald, Los Angeles Surgeon, as quoted in Newsweek, November 18, 1969

  9. #4 “The ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.” -Western Union Internal Memo, in 1876

  10. #3 “The Earth is the center of the universe.” -Ptolemy, the great Egyptian astronomer, in the second century

  11. #2 “Nothing of importance happened today.” -Written by King George III of England on July 4, 1776

  12. #1 “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” -Charles H. Duell, U.S. Commissioner of Patents, in 1899

  13. RIDICULOUSNESS? Aren’t those quotes PURE • At the time these statements were made, the people believed them to be true!

  14. Most Ridiculous Quotes by Teens “No one in my family has ever gone to college. I’d be crazy to think I could make it.” “It’s no use. My mom and I will never get along. We’re just too different.” “Being smart is a ‘white’ thing.” “My teacher is out to get me.” “She’s so pretty – I’ll bet she’s a jerk.” “You can’t get ahead in life unless you know the right people.” “Me? Thin? Are you kidding? My whole family is full of fat people.” “It’s impossible to get a good job around here ‘cause nobody wants to hire a teen.”

  15. Comparison • What do these two lists of quotes have in common? • They are all perceptions about the way things are. • They are all inaccurate or incomplete. • The people who made the statements were convinced they were true. • These are perceptions…or… PARADIGMS

  16. PARADIGM(pair-a-dimes) Definition: The way you see something; your point of view; frame of reference; or belief.

  17. Paradigms • As you may have noticed, our paradigms are often way off the mark, and, as a result, they create limitations. • Example: You may be convinced that you don’t have what it takes to get into college. But, remember, Ptolemy was just as convinced that the Earth was the center of the universe. And, as it turns out, it is definitely not.

  18. Composition Notebook (Journal) • Title: Paradigms • List some of your strengths & weaknesses • What are you thankful for? • What could you do without in your life? • List what you like and dislike about yourself

  26. What was Nick’s paradigm? • Look at your lists and think about what you’ve written. • How has your paradigm (the way you see the world) changed after watching and listening to Nick?
